Based on the Johnny Depp movie of the same name, the musical follows the personal life of Peter Pan author JM Barrie. It received its world premiere at the Leicester Curve in October 2012.

Weinstein has brought in new people to alter the musical since its debut last year, in the hopes of eventually transferring to the West End.

Barlow will be joined by composers Scott Frankel and Michael Koire, while This House writer James Graham has been hired to edit the story.

No production dates or castings have been confirmed yet, with Julian Ovenden and Rosalie Craig playing the roles of Barrie and Sylvia Davies in the original production.

Barlow said of his appointment: "This is something I've always wanted to do so it's a real privilege to be involved. I'm really enjoying working with the team and I love the story; it's also great to be working with a legendary creative like Harvey Weinstein."

Weinstein described the star as "one of the finest songwriters in the world".

Barlow is currently a judge on the UK's X Factor talent series on ITV alongside Louis Walsh, Nicole Scherzinger and Sharon Osbourne.
