Before playing 'Gene Vincent' from his current album Rock and Roll Animals, Haines read an excerpt about Vincent's latter years and death from Farren's 2002 memoir Give The Anarchist A Cigarette.

Other songs performed from the new album included 'A Badger Called Nick Lowe', 'Magic Interlude', 'Angel of the North', 'From Hersham To Heaven', 'Rock N Roll Animals in Space' and lead single 'Rock N Roll Animals'.

Julia Davis, who narrates several interludes on Haines's new album, was in attendance at the show, but did not join the singer-songwriter on stage.

Her portions were replicated by Haines, who occasionally accompanied himself on keyboards and a single drum, quipping that he was performing all the overdubs simultaneously as on the album, but "without editing things out".

Haines continued his solo acoustic set with songs from his last album Nine and a Half Psychedelic Meditations on British Wrestling of the 1970s and early '80s.

Among the tracks played from his 2011 concept record were 'Saturday Afternoon', 'Inside The Restless Mind Of Rollerball Rocco', 'Big Daddy Got A Casio VL-Tone' and 'Haystacks In Heaven'.

As at his show at London's Lexington in 2011, Haines was accompanied by a man in a Kendo Nagasaki mask during 'Saturday Afternoon', who handed out liver sausage sandwiches to gig-goers.

The ex-Auteurs frontman closed his set with a selection of tracks from earlier in his career, finishing with renditions of with 'Leeds United', 'Show Girl', 'Baader Meinhof' and 'Lenny Valentino'.

Rock and Roll Animals is out now on CD, vinyl and digital download via Cherry Red.
