West captivated the Video Music Awards audience with a dramatic version of 'Blood on the Leaves', which features on his current album Yeezus.

His performance was noticeably more intimate than previous turns on the awards show, with West rapping passionately against a projected image of a darkened landscape.

The rapper's seventh performance at the MTV awards show ties him with Madonna for the all-time record.

West's most controversial moment at the Video Music Awards came in 2009, when he interrupted Taylor Swift's 'Best Female Video' acceptance speech to suggest that Beyoncé was more deserving of the gong.

He later apologised for his behaviour, and Swift recently joked about the incident on social media.

The hip-hop star returned to the ceremony in 2010 for a critically-acclaimed performance of 'Runaway'.

Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards main show also featured Lady Gaga opening the telecast with her first performance of 'Applause', and the long-awaited reunion of *NSYNC.

The MTV VMAs will be broadcast on Bank Holiday Monday (August 26) at 9pm in the UK.
