Gareth Gates: "McCartney owes me"
Published Saturday, Jun 9 2007, 14:21 BST | By Daniel Kilkelly
Gareth Gates has insisted that Paul McCartney should be grateful that he covered Unchained Melody.
The Pop Idol runner-up attended Macca's gig at the Electric Ballroom in London this week and was also invited to the after-show party. However, Gates has claimed that he wasn't surprised to get an invitation because McCartney owns the rights to Unchained Melody and received royalty payments when he covered the song.
"Paul owes me. It's not just Unchained Melody that made him money. Will [Young] and I recorded the Beatles' The Long And Winding Road, so I think I deserve my after-show party ticket," Gareth told the Daily Star.
"It was an amazing gig. Seeing the crowd respond to Hey Jude really made me want to cover it. All those voices singing along is something I'd love to experience."
