Hayes reveals Stax 50 years celebrations
Published Friday, Aug 3 2007, 09:41 BST | By Dave West
Isaac Hayes has revealed plans to mark 50 years since the birth of legendary soul record label Stax.
The multi-award-winning singer, currently playing festival dates in the UK, has recently recovered from a stroke, but said he is ready to celebrate.
Stax Records, also home to Otis Redding and Booker T and the MGs, is relaunching this year to mark the anniversary. The Stax Museum of American Soul Music is opening up at the site of the company's old home.
Several compilation albums are being released, along with special gigs in the US, and Hayes is now ready to make his own contribution.
He explained: "First of all, its 50 years! I didn’t think about it, but its 50 years man! It’s been good to me.
"We’re celebrating because 50 years of anything, you need to celebrate! And I’m going to do another album next year."
A movie of the label's history, Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story, is due to be released in cinemas in the UK later this year. It features previously unseen footage, a documentary and coverage of the 1967 Stax/Volt Tour of Norway.
