Elbow singer Guy Garvey has promised that the band's new output will be much "darker".
Garvey has revealed that the death of close friend Brian Clancy has been the driving force behind their new record.
The Manchester band's front man told Gigwise: "Lyrically in parts it's lighter, but in parts it's much darker - it's been a tough couple of years for the band in many ways.
"I was writing lyrics throughout the healing process so there's some really positive life-affirming stuff. Writing more about how loss affects people positively rather than negatively."
The record which is scheduled for release in January 2008 on Polydor Records will not be a "miserable, moaning record" claimed Garvey.
