Festival debates 'healthy' music scene

The organiser of Manchester's In the City music festival has said live music is in a "healthy" state as he launches the annual event.

It features speeches and discussions about industry issues during the day and performances at night.

Jon-Paul Waddington, general manager of the festival, said one of the hot topics would be the effect of the internet.

He is optimistic about the state of British music: "Live music is in the healthiest state it has been in most people's living memory.

"There's so much fantastic music out there and so many ways of getting the music across. And the record labels that do adapt and do change stand to inherit some of the best bands this country has ever seen."

Former Factory Records boss and Manchester legend Tony Wilson, who died earlier this year, will also be in people's memories at the annual event.

Yvette Livesey, who was his partner and is involved, explained: "This isn't going to be a memorial to Tony but a celebration of the music industry.

"And also talking about the very bright future we actually believe it has as long as it continues to evolve and adapt over the next few years."
