The late Beatle's lock, which was only expected to raise between £2,000 and £3,000 at a sale of the band's memorabilia, was eventually purchased by an undisclosed telephone bidder.
Sold as part of the Betty Glasgow collection, the hair was given personally to Glasgow during the filming of the Beatles' movies A Hard Day's Night and Help.
According to the BBC, Lennon attached the lock to a copy of the book A Spaniard In The Works, with the message: "To Betty, lots of love and hair, from John Lennon xx."
A spokesperson for Gorringes Auction House said: "It is astonishing that there is still so much interest in the Beatles and the sale goes to prove that John Lennon is still an icon.
"To have some of Lennon's hair along with a signed note from him really does give it fantastic provenance and authenticity.
"Collections of this kind are rare and the hair in particular is a real one-off for Beatles collectors."
