EMI to axe 2,000 jobs, say reports

EMI will this week announce it is cutting 2,000 jobs, according to several newspaper reports.

It is part of a cost-cutting plan to revive the music giant's financial state which will be unveiled at a conference in London on Tuesday.

Private equity group Terra Firma bought EMI for £3.2bn in the summer and its new boss Guy Hands is grappling with declining sales.

Hands's approach has already proved controversial with Radiohead, who left the publisher last autumn, blaming him. Robbie Williams's manager Tim Clark has described him as a "plantation owner" and Coldplay are also considering their future with EMI.

Most of the cuts will apparently be in the recorded music division, which employs 4,400 people, while marketing, sales, distribution and management roles across EMI's sub-labels are expected to be centralised.

The boss is said to be aiming to improve profits by £100 million by the summer.
