The stadium, which became a popular gig destination after the Beatles played there in 1965, is being closed down because the New York Mets baseball team are moving home in 2009.
Joel has been named as the headliner for a night called 'The Last Play At Shea, From The Beatles To Billy', which is taking place on July 16.
Tickets go on sale on February 16.
It will be the first in-season gig at the stadium since Eric Clapton and Elton John performed at the venue in 1992.
Bruce Springsteen, Jimi Hendrix, The Police and Janis Joplin have all played the baseball ground in the past.
Joel's gig will make him the first musician to play at both the Shea Stadium and the Yankee Stadium.
