Miles played with Hendrix and bassist Billy Cox in the group Band of Gypsys, which released a live album in 1970.
It was the last album Hendrix authorised to be released.
The drummer also worked with the guitar legend on the seminal Electric Ladyland LP, where his tight, funky drumming style received favourable reviews from critics.
Publicist Duane Lee confirmed that Miles died at his home in Austin, Texas after suffering from congestive heart failure.
Lee told the Associated Press: "He loved to laugh. We spent more time laughing than anything else. He was a great joke teller."
