The veteran singer said he was determined to be different from his fellow artists when he first appeared on the music scene in the 1950s.
Contactmusic quotes him as saying: "When I first started out in showbiz I didn't want to look like everyone else. So I went out and bought a pink jacket which made me different."
However, he insisted that today's musicians have no individuality, saying: "I just don't understand now why the young artists all want to look the same. They all wear the same baggy trousers and the same baggy tops. I couldn't bear to look like the rest."
Sir Cliff recently admitted that he once wanted to be Elvis Presley.
