Mike Smith of '60s band The Dave Clark Five has died of pneumonia, aged 64.
The singer and keyboardist passed away yesterday at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.
He had been admitted on Wednesday with a chest infection stemming from complications from a spinal cord injury he suffered when he fell off a fence in 2003.
The accident left him paralysed and he was in hospital until last December, when he moved into a nearby property with his wife.
Smith had planned to travel to New York to attend the band's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10.
His agent Margo Lewis said in a statement: "These last five years were extremely difficult for Mike.
"I am incredibly saddened to lose him, his energy and his humour, but I am comforted by the fact that he had the chance to spend his final months and days at home with his loving wife, Charlie, whom he adored, instead of in the hospital, and that he was able to attend a recent concert in London by his good friend, Bruce Springsteen.
"He was extremely excited and honoured to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and I am glad that he will be remembered as a 'Hall of Famer', because he was in so many ways."
The Dave Clark Five were an integral part of the British Invasion of the early 1960s and scored hits including 'Glad All Over', 'Catch Us If You Can' and 'Over and Over'.
