The chart-topping singer studied the history behind some of her favourite records as she worked on her debut album Rockferry, which is released on Monday.
"I was quite isolated growing up but now I'm a bit of a music geek," she told the Telegraph. "I love discovering things and finding out what stemmed from where and what went on in this era, and how that had an effect, and how people reacted in that time.
"How was it the first time you heard David Bowie's 'The Man Who Sold The World'? What was that like? It's amazing."
The 23-year-old also revealed that she was unsure about the style of music she wanted to make when she first decided to pursue a singing career.
"I didn't know what I wanted at first, when I was about 19," she explained. "I couldn't articulate it, but I knew I wanted this huge, lush sound, this grandness. I wanted something extreme."
