Duffy dated music producer Mark Durston, who is 12 years older than her, for five years, according to The Mirror.
Speaking about his time with the popstar, Durston said: "Aimee is a beautiful person and a huge, huge talent.
"I wish her only the very best. We had a great time but in the end we went our separate ways. I know she will be a success because she is so talented."
The singer is due to appear at the Wakestock music festival, which Durston organises, later this summer.
Duffy's pals believe he is the basis for many of the lyrics on her debut album Rockferry.
"Mark was Aimee's first love and the inspiration for so many of her songs. Her feelings were poured into these amazing songs," said a friend.
"She was completely in love with the guy and believed they'd always be together. But by the time Aimee was in her early 20s, things were starting to happen for her and she had to put more and more of her energy into launching her career and I think they perhaps started to grow apart."
Another added: "Stevie Wonder was her favourite [musician]. I think he influenced her music and Mark influenced her lyrics."
Duffy's latest single 'Mercy' has spent three weeks on top of the UK single chart.
