The singer denied suggestions that she is motivated by being a celebrity or earning cash to fund her expensive lifestyle.
She said: "I never really felt famous. I don't do it just because I want to make money or I want to be famous. I need to make music."
She added: "If I didn't have this, I don't know where I would be."
Carey, 37, recently claimed that she is a role model for social outcasts.
