The singer becomes the first British female artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 in more than 20 years, matching Kim Wilde's 1987 success with 'You Keep Me Hangin' On'.
'Bleeding Love' has already reached number one in more than 25 countries worldwide, including Australia, France, Germany, Ireland and the UK.
Lewis's leap pushes last week's number one, 'Love Is This Club' by Usher and Young Jeezy, into second place.
New entries in the top ten come from New Orleans rapper Lil Wayne with 'Lollipop', and New York City rapper Lil Mama with 'Shawty Get Loose'.
Elsewhere, OneRepublic climb from 16 to twelve with 'Stop and Stare', while Israeli singer Yael Naim leaps from 43 to 20 with 'New Soul'.
