The quintet announced their reunion yesterday ahead of their appearance on this morning's episode of NBC show Today.
They plan a new album and tour to mark the 20th anniversary of the release of their multi-platinum second LP Hangin' Tough.
Donnie Wahlberg, who carved out a successful acting career following the band's split, told the Boston Herald that the fan response had been "incredible".
The 38-year-old revealed that he had written 80% of the group's new songs with bandmates Joey McIntyre and Jordan Knight.
He added: "I had no interest going out on a nostalgia tour and singing [just] the same material... [but] we absolutely will do the old songs for sure."
The group sold over 50 million albums and had two number one singles in the UK before disbanding in 1994.
