The festival organiser claimed the rapper was unsure about performing to a non-urban crowd and needed his reassurances that the gig would be popular.
Eavis told the event's official website: "I was discussing it [the headline slot] with Jay-Z and his manager. They were slightly worried about the audience not being a London or Birmingham urban crowd.
"I said, 'OK, I'll do something that I haven't done for the entire 38 year history of the festival - I'll take you on stage and introduce you to the audience.' And Jay-Z said, 'Michael, I'll do your show'."
Glastonbury Festival tickets go on sale this Sunday at 9am. It takes place on June 27-29.
Kings of Leon and The Verve will headline the Pyramid Stage at the summer bash alongside the US rapper. The Enemy, The Fratellis, CSS, Pete Doherty, Neil Diamond, Leonard Cohen and Massive Attack are also expected to play.
