Jane's Addiction win NME Genius gong

Jane's Addiction will be the first recipients of NME's US Godlike Genius Award.

The provocative LA rockers will be handed the gong at the inaugural American version of the NME Awards, which take place at the El Rey Theatre on April 23.

The band, which formed in 1985, founded the touring Lollapalooza Festival to create a cultural focus and voice for the "alternative nation".

Speaking about the decision, NME editor Conor McNicholas said: "When we were in the planning stages of bringing the NME Awards to America, Jane's Addiction were always in our thoughts.

"They are exactly the sort of once-in-a-lifetime inspirational, aspirational, no-holds-barred, genre-busting, risk-taking, pioneering group which sums up what the NME Awards is all about."

Previous winners of the UK NME Awards Godlike Genius gong include John Peel, Shaun Ryder, Paul McCartney, Primal Scream, Manic Street Preachers, Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis and Ian Brown.

Jane's Addiction have released four LPs and consist of singer Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkin and bassist Eric Avery.
