The 64-year-old rocker said he likes to keep away from the group when they aren't on tour.
He said: "If we aren't working then we probably only talk around once a year. A few faxes, drawings and notes here and there. If you are stuck on the road for two and a half years together, you've said just about everything you've got to say to one another."
The guitarist admitted he doesn't envision quitting touring anytime soon but said big outdoor shows are often ruined by the weather.
"There are some great things about small rooms - that controlled environment," he said. "But outdoors, God joins the band, with wind and rain. But when we are on stage we're basically in our office."
