The 8,000-word paper, titled 'Business Relationships the Morrissey Way', analyses the similarities between his idiosyncratic lyrics and buyers and suppliers in the food industry.
The study, which has been published in the British Food Journal, was written by marketing lecturers Sheena Leek (Birmingham Business School), Dr. Martin Hingley (Harper Adams University College) and Dr. Adam Lindgreen, Professor of Strategic Marketing from Hull University - all huge Smiths fans.
The paper compares Morrissey's attitude to sex, love and breaking up to relationship attraction, development and dissolution in the food industry.
The lyric "The sun shines out of our behinds / No it’s not like any other love / This one is different, because it’s us" from 'Hand In Glove' is cited as a reference to powerful buyers discriminating against suppliers.
Morrissey's former Smiths bandmate Johnny Marr is Visiting Professor of Music at Salford University.
