R&B singer Usher has explained why he shouted "hello Manchester" at Radio 1's Big Weekend show in Maidstone.

The popstar was greeted by boos from several audience members at the festival after he opened his performance with the blunder.

However, the 'Love In This Club' singer insisted he hadn't forgotten where he was playing, claiming instead that he was paying tribute to his favourite football team Manchester United.

Usher said that he is "good friends" with United and England defender Rio Ferdinand and argued he was just voicing his support for the soccer club, who won the Premier League at the weekend.
