The American crooner hits the top spot with his 29th studio release, Home Before Dark, breaking the record for the artist who has taken longest to reach the top of the albums chart with an original work. The 67-year-old released his first album, The Feel Of Neil Diamond, in 1966.
Dance act Pendulum manage a strong number two debut with In Silico, while last week's number one - Scooter's Jumping All Over The World - falls to three. Madonna's Hard Candy drops to five in its third week on the chart, while Gabriella Cilmi re-enters the top ten with Lessons To Be Learned.
Other new entries include Jay Sean's My Own Way at six, Frank Sinatra compilation Nothing But The Best at ten, and Kelly Rowland reissue Ms Kelly - Deluxe Edition at 23. Moby's Last Night has a disappointing debut, charting at 28.
