Maximo Park singer Paul Smith has claimed that his band's new songs have a "funny groove" to them.

The frontman also revealed that the indie rockers are hoping to release a follow-up to 2007's Our Earthly Pleasures album at the start of 2009.

"I don't want to get trapped into the whole schedule thing, it becomes far too businesslike," Smith told XFM.

"But we're working every day on the songs. Personally, I'd like to get the songs out January or February next year which would mean recording this autumn, and I don't see why we can't."

When asked what the new tracks were sounding like, he replied: "I like intriguing people with the names [of the songs].

"But I don't know what people are going to make of these ones. They sound quite different...there's a funny groove to them."
