Stephen Gately has revealed that he was often depressed during his early days with Boyzone.

The singer said he struggled with homesickness and worries about his sexuality when the boyband started out.

He told the Daily Mail: "It [wasn't] easy when Boyzone first formed. We had no money, and we'd be staying in a hotel in a strange town and I'd sit on the bed and just cry.

"I was lonely and I missed my family, and I was worried because I had all these girl fans who didn't know I was gay."

He added: "But the others were tremendously supportive. We'd all have a group hug and promise to take care for each other, which we did."

Gately had three hit singles and starred in Joseph And The Technicolour Dreamcoat after the band split in 2000.

They kicked off their reunion tour in Belfast last weekend.
