The Saturdays: 'Issues'

It wasn't so long ago that it seemed as though pop was dying a painful death. Following the demise of Smash Hits, CD:UK and the like, landfill indie and US R&B reigned supreme at the top end of the charts. Thanks in part to The Saturdays, this year has seen the charts reignited with some fresh-sounding, infectious pop songs that should give the Akons and Arctics of this world a good run for their money.

'Issues', the third single from the group's debut LP Chasing Lights, sees the girls slow down the pace as they warble their way through a song about tumultuous relationship "issues". Having traded the word "slap" for an altogether tamer "leave" in the killer line "Don't know if I should slap you or kiss you", this song loses a bit of its edge and runs dangerously close to sounding like a bog standard girl-band ballad. It's a pleasant enough offering at this time of year, but it lacks the distinctive appeal of the group's previous singles.
