Kanye West ft. Kid Cudi: 'Welcome To Heartbreak'

By
Released on Monday, May 18 2009

Poor Kanye. He's earned more mainstream plaudits than any hip-hop artist since Eminem, and with 808s & Heartbreak, he took a brave shift in direction that went some way to backing up some of his more vainglorious claims. But how do we thank him? By impersonating him on Twitter and taking the mickey on South Park.

'Welcome To Heartbreak', like much of 808s, is an introspective slice of hip-pop sung almost entirely via Auto-Tune. There's nothing wrong with West using the available technology to transform his voice, but this device has become horribly ubiquitous in recent years. The beats are beautifully understated and the lyrics are fine - a standard "what does it all mean?" rockstar lament - but you can't help worrying that the vocal effects give the track a "Made In 2008" stamp that could make it close to unlistenable in a few years' time.
