Daniel Merriweather: 'Impossible'

By
Daniel Merriweather: 'Impossible'
Released on Monday, Aug 17 2009

Daniel Merriweather is still best known as the protégé of brass-fixated producer Mark Ronson. Providing the vocals on Ronson's 'Stop Me', he managed to annoy more sniffy Morrissey fans than anyone since faux lesbians t.A.T.u. brilliantly sexed up The Smiths' 'How Soon Is Now?'. For that he deserves a pat on the back, but sadly it's not enough to make us embrace his own middling punts at string-led balladry or beatsy 70s soul.

With a melody that sounds like a hi-NRG Ricky Martin cover of Neil Diamond's 'Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon', there's something soul-destroyingly empty at the heart of 'Impossible'. While you have to admire a song self-aware enough to follow the lyric "Girl I probably said some corny lines" with the likes of "A thousand armies couldn't stop me... Stormy weather couldn't stop me", it all counts for nothing when it's wrapped up in such a bland and uninspiring package.
