The Saturdays: 'Ego'

By
The Saturdays: 'Ego'
Released on Monday, Jan 4 2010

Pop/rocky trailer single 'Forever Is Over' may have made number two, but it didn't do much for The Saturdays' second album. In fact, Wordshaker dropped out of the top 75 a mere three weeks after its October release and has since suffered the embarrassment of being outsold by their 2008 debut, Chasing Lights, on several occasions. Little wonder they've returned to familiar electropop territory for the follow-up.

Sadly, 'Ego' demonstrates why LP#1 might remain more appealing to record-buyers than LP#2. The chorus is catchy enough, and the girls do well with the Let's Cut That Arrogant Sod Down To Size lyrics, but this lacks the spark and sense of freshness that made even Lights album tracks like 'Lies' so fantastic. "You need to have a sit down with your ego," they inform the titular bighead on the chorus. They, on the other hand, need to have a sit down with their label and get 'One Shot' - Wordshaker's stomping standout - confirmed as the next single.
