Lily Allen 'Air Balloon' single review: 'Playground pop that lacks heart'

Lily Allen
She's only three songs into her comeback, but Lily Allen is already starting to sound fed up. "When I get bored, I kinda drift away," she sings on her latest offering, before adding: "I'm not sure quite why we work all day." Such comments could explain why her clothing shop went bust last year, but surely she doesn't want to see her music career end up the same way?

As far as hooks go, 'Air Balloon' is packed to the brim with ear-snagging but nonsensical lyrics ("Somebody remind me where I am, Miami or Timbuktu?/ Did I ever tell you my uncle's monkey ran away from the zoo?") and sung in a bratty, playground pop chant that sounds like a hybrid of MIA and Cher Lloyd. Sadly, lacking in spades is the personal touch that usually makes Allen's songs so distinctive and relatable.
