Speaking at this evening's National Television Awards, the reality TV judge announced his plans for the charity record.
The 50-year-old told PA: "We made the decision today. We had a request from the prime minister and The Sun newspaper, 'Would we put a record together?' So we haven't got a lot of time but we are going to do something and attempt to raise as much money as possible."
Cowell's X Factor co-star Cheryl Cole added to Five Live: "I just heard about [the song] tonight. It sounds like a great idea... Simon is great at giving back."
Earlier tonight, The X Factor picked up the 'Most Popular Talent Show' gong at the NTAs.
