The reality TV singer, who finished fourth on last year's show, has penned over 50 tracks for the record, which he is aiming to release in early 2011.
Speaking to the Kent Messenger about his musical plans, he said: "There is no pressure. There is no record label attached to it. We are just working on some music and hopefully it will be ready next year.
"It's got loads of mixes. I'm into loads of different music right now. It's got an essence of The Police, James Morrison, Stevie Wonder and James Brown to it."
Meanwhile, Johnson also insisted that he had no regrets about taking part in The X Factor, despite the negative press he received during his stint on the show.
"I thought the limelight would fade after five minutes of people knowing you," he said. "But I am still working now the new series has arrived. Everyone feels like it's bad to have an X Factor tag. In some ways it put me where I am today. I'm embracing it.
"I think the people who feel the need to turn their back on the show forget where they are coming from. I will never do that."
