The singer, whose first studio set is called Wide Awake, admits that he was keen to find a unique direction for the record, and was frustrated by comments suggesting that he was "sitting at home doing nothing".
"It's quite annoying. People think you're sitting at home doing nothing, but you're here, there and everywhere recording for 11 hours a day!" He told This Morning.
"It was a frustrating but amazing time, too, because you get to try different music and record different songs.
"I didn't want to do the generic thing that everyone would have expected," he continued. "It took a long time to find the direction, and it wasn't until 'Ambitions' came that everyone was like 'that's the way we want to go'."
Discussing this year's X Factor contestants, the star confessed that he was backing Cher Lloyd and Rebecca Ferguson, but admitted: "I kind of have a feeling One Direction are going to win. It would be nice to see a band win."
McElderry releases his new single 'Someone Wake Me Up' on December 6.
