One Direction celebrate Niall's 18th birthday on 'Daybreak', talk debut album sound
One Direction have said that they have worked to "define" their own sound for their debut album.
The boyband rose to fame on last year's series of The X Factor, on which they finished third, losing out to Rebecca Ferguson and Matt Cardle. The group - Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik - released their first single 'What Makes You Beautiful' on Sunday.

Styles told ITV's Daybreak: "It's kind of weird - while we were on the show we really wanted to win, and then coming off it, our year has been so busy. And we're so lucky and grateful to have everything that we've never really thought, 'I wish we'd have won'. We're just loving what we're doing - it's so much fun."
Payne said of their time away recording: "We just wanted to get the music right. I mean it was hard coming off a show doing constant covers every week, then we had to kind of go away and define our own sound and make the right record rather than just rushing one out. So we took a lot of time to think about it."

One Direction celebrated Horan's 18th birthday during their appearance on the breakfast programme, with the singer being presented with a cake by hosts Christine Bleakley and Adrian Chiles.

The pop five-piece also praised The X Factor's new judges Gary Barlow, Kelly Rowland and Tulisa Contostavlos.
"We watch it, we think the new judging panel is great, I think it's really cool," said Styles, while Horan agreed: "I think people don't like to see change, but when the change happens then they love it."
Tomlinson added: "It's amazing the talent this year, amazing. We're all big fans."
One Direction's 'What Makes You Beautiful' is out now.
