The Goo Goo Dolls 'Iris' has stormed to number one on the iTunes chart after it was performed by singer Frankie Cocozza on The X Factor.

Viewers on Sunday night saw the contestant perform the track - which appears on Goo Goo Dolls' 1998 album Dizzy Up the Girl - in a bid to impress the judges at Boot Camp.

The 18-year-old secured a place at Judges' Houses, where he will be mentored by Take That star Gary Barlow.

'Iris' climbed to the top spot, knocking Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera's 'Moves Like Jagger' into second place. Former chart-toppers from Dappy and One Direction sit at number three and five respectively.

Last week, Damien Rice's 'Cannonball' returned to the top 10 after being sung by an auditionee. Other songs to have benefited from exposure on the ITV1 show include Faith Hill's 'There You'll Be', which went top 10 after a performance in 2008.

Mint Royale's remix of 'Singin' In The Rain' topped the UK singles chart in the summer of 2008 after George Sampson danced to the track on Britain's Got Talent.

The X Factor continues with a Judges' Houses double bill this weekend.
