Matt Cardle has placed fourth in a list of first week album sales from an X Factor winner.

The singer failed to exceed the massive sales of fellow previous champions Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke and Shayne Ward with his debut LP Letters.

Cardle landed at number two with his first cut on Sunday, while former Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher took the top spot.

However, Cardle's album sales of 70,896 units place him in fourth position on a table of X Factor winners' first week sales, reports Music Week.

Lewis leads the list with her debut Spirit achieving record-breaking initial sales of 375,872 back in 2007, while Ward follows with 201,266 for his first week.

Burke is in third with 132,065 units of Overcome shifted in 2009 during its first week on sale, placing Cardle in fourth.

Trailing the most recent winner is the competition's first victor Steve Brookstein, who accumulated first week numbers of 50,989.

Joe McElderry: 'Classic'

Joe McElderry's Wide Awake managed 39,405 copies last year and Leon Jackson's Right Now completes the list with 37,197 sales.

McElderry's debut effort is currently the lowest-selling debut by a winner, with its total sales to date at just 100,040 copies.

However, McElderry's follow-up Classic - which wasn't released through Simon Cowell's Syco label - has already sold 177,530 just two months after its release in August.

Lewis's Spirit remains the biggest-selling album from an X Factor champ having sold over 3 million copies in the UK and over 7 million worldwide.

Following the charting of his debut disc over the weekend, Cardle has announced plans to embark on a 20-date tour of the UK and Ireland next year.
