The Westlife star confessed that he doesn't believe the most recent X Factor boyband have the same energy as their 2010 counterparts.
"I've really enjoyed Union J, but I don't think they've got the same spark as One Direction had," he said.
"I think they can definitely have a career off the back of the show, but when I watch them I don't get the same buzz I got off One Direction. They're really good singers though."
He added: "It's so strange because when we were the buzz and in everyone's faces we didn't know about it and were just riding the wave. So watching One Direction now, it's incredible to think we were doing the same thing 15 years ago.
"I sit there and go, 'Wow, I can't believe they've sold this many records' or 'I can't believe that they are doing this show' and then someone points out that I did that with Westlife. It's a strange feeling."
Egan again stated his desire for a role on The X Factor UK, calling it his "dream job".
"It's an amazing show and it's still the biggest show out there. Westlife were part of the show from the very start, so to be a permanent fixture would be amazing," he explained.
