Preeya ft. Mumzy Stranger: 'Shimmy'

Like Kylie Minogue, Natalie Imbruglia and Martine McCutcheon before her, Preeya Kalidas is ready to make the transition from soap star to popstar - a move which will come as no surprise to 'Enders fans who are already aware of the self-confessed diva's gutsy vocals. Sadly, with this debut single her post-Walford career gets off to an even shakier start than Syed and Amira's marriage.

As bhangra-tinged pop-R&B tracks go, 'Shimmy' has bags of potential, but it's let down by a chorus that never quite hits the melodic G-spot. The interjections from Mumzy Stranger, meanwhile, only serve to distract from her moment to shine. To be fair, Kalidas shows enough sass here to suggest she's one to keep an eye on, but until we hear the rest of her debut album, let's be thankful that the gate to Albert Square has been left open.
