The former American Idol star's 'The Best Days Are Ahead of Me' reached number 31 in the US charts last December.
The star, who performed on Thursday's episode of the talent contest, explained that one of the writers had lost his wife shortly before penning the single.
Kent Blazy's spouse Sharon died on January 19 last year, only five days after Gokey made his debut on Idol.
However, USA Today reports that Blazy did not tune in for the last season of the Fox reality show.
Blazy said: "It doesn't matter how old you are, your best days can still be ahead of you. But if you feel like, 'I've lost my spouse, my life is over', then that's what you're going to create. My motto is I'm going to be me, be happy and change the world."
