The 24-year-old - who is currently touring with the rest of the Top 10 - told USA Today that he does not consider himself a "perfect singer" but his performances are driven from his emotions.
"My music comes from my emotion, always. When I let that out, in a way that I couldn't, necessarily, on Idol - because you're given only so much time, and in that little time you want to make an impact - a lot of what I do is just emotion, getting into the music with the band, feeding off the audience," he explained.
"It's a different ballgame now. I get to open up and be myself. Not that I wasn't on the show. I am a quieter guy sometimes. When it comes to my music, I'm like that."
He continued: "At the same time, now we're performing. Now we're playing a concert. We're in an arena, playing for thousands of people. If anything, you'll see a little more energy, and a little more of me."
He added that winning the show was "awesome" but he still thinks he needs to "prove" himself to the audience.
"I won an opportunity to do something awesome, which is to make an album and tour and all that kind of stuff," he explained. "For me, it's kind of like a beginning process."
The American Idol season nine Top 10 kicked off their multi-city summer tour yesterday in Detroit.
