The singer - who won the eighth season of the Fox competition - told the Chicago Tribune that he predicts season nine winner DeWyze can be successful.
"As long as Lee works hard, does what he loves, does his thing, I think he'll be completely fine," he is quoted as saying.
The 'Live Like We're Dying' star also recounted his own post-Idol experience, saying: "You don't know what's going on. It's big stadiums every night in front of a ton of people, lots of press, lots of answering questions. After the album is done - that's when it's okay to take a break."
Allen - who is on tour across the US - was in Chicago to play a free outdoor concert at the John Hancock Centre Plaza. DeWyze can currently be seen on the 'American Idol 2010 Tour' alongside the rest of the season nine Top 10.
