The singer - who scooped the 'Choice: American Idol Alum' prize at this weekend's Teen Choice Awards - will release The Other Side Of Down later this year.
Speaking backstage in a video posted by Zap2It, he said: "I don't really take myself seriously, I'm kind of a dork and I just want to show that in my music.
"I'm not trying to be something cool or impressive... I'm just going to be myself. I think when you are just true to yourself that's what people connect to the most so that's what I'm trying to do with this album."
The 19-year-old was also asked for his thoughts on recent rumours about potential new additions to the American Idol judging panel for the show's tenth season, including Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.
"It's been really interesting," he replied. "They need to give American Idol a new face because Simon [Cowell] is gone, Paula [Abdul] is gone. I feel like it's time for American Idol to have a complete face-lift or something."
Archuleta recently unveiled new single 'Something About Love', while The Other Side Of Down follows on October 5.
