During an appearance on The Howard Stern Show, Tyler disclosed that the 'Stairway To Heaven' band sought to enlist his services after their singer Robert Plant refused to take part in a full-scale reunion.
"I spoke to Jimmy Page's manager, Peter Mensch, who's been a good friend of mine forever," he said. "He said Robert wouldn't play with them again, and would I want to come over and jam with the guys? I went over and played."
The frontman further explained that he was tempted to collaborate with Led Zeppelin, but ultimately decided that his best option was to remain with Aerosmith.
"It came time for [Jimmy] to say, 'You want to write a record with me'? I went, 'No.' I'm in Aerosmith. He's in the biggest band in the world and I'm in a band like that. I have such an allegiance to my band and I love it so much."
In early 2009, Mensch claimed that all discussions about a Led Zeppelin reunion were "over".
Led Zeppelin initially split in 1980, following the death of drummer John Bonham. Bonham's son Jason filled in on drums during the band's one-off concert in 2007.
Tyler is currently serving as a judge on American Idol, which airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays on Fox.
