In an interview with Rolling Stone, the rocker revealed that he joined the Fox reality competition to prove a point to his bandmates that he would not be "held hostage" by their attempts to throw him out of the group.
"Did I take this job to show the band? F**k, yeah," he explained. "Not to show them, but that I can't be held hostage anymore. I will be my own hostage. The band can't throw me out."
He went on to reveal that he and guitarist Joe Perry were unable to complete Aerosmith's 2008 album because they were high on too many drugs.
"Joe was high and he couldn't play... I couldn't sing, really, because I was snorting everything, and it f**ks up your throat. It was the wrong time," he said.
Tyler was recently censored after accidentally cursing on a live episode of American Idol.
