Cook released his second record This Loud Morning today. It is the follow-up to his million-selling eponymous debut album, released in 2008.
During an appearance on NBC's Today this morning, the singer said: "[Music] is everything. This new record especially was more of a therapeutic outlet than I envisioned when we went into the process.
"This record was great. It definitely saved me some money on psychiatrists."
Cook, who shot to fame after winning the seventh season of American Idol, added to Ann Curry that he was thankful he had taken his time between releasing his first album and This Loud Morning.
"The last two years have been so crazy and I've certainly had a lot of amazing experiences and a lot of awful experiences," he said. "To be able to take the time on this record - and we spent a year and a half on it - and delve into some things and write about them and get them on this record [was great]."
Cook premiered the first track from the record, 'The Last Goodbye', during an American Idol results show in April. He also recorded the farewell song for this season's competition, a new version of 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' by Simple Minds.
This Loud Morning is available now.
