By Nick Levine | She contributed to the
Dreamgirls and
Sex And The City soundtracks, but this is the first time that
Jennifer Hudson has released a single with expectations - and actually those expectations are pretty high. 'Spotlight' is the lead single from an Oscar winner's debut album, a big-budget affair featuring contributions from Timbaland, Ne-Yo and Diane Warren.
Though it doesn't feel big and important enough to be launching Hudson's recording career proper, 'Spotlight' is actually a pretty decent offering: a smooth, classy R&B toe-tapper that makes good use of Hudson's rich voice and sassy personality. Plus, as with everything Hudson does, there's a certain satisfaction in knowing that none of this should be happening to someone who finished seventh on
American Idol in 2004.
