Cliff Richard: 'Thank You For A Lifetime'
Later this month Cliff Richard will celebrate the 50th anniversary of his first hit single ('Move It', No.2 in September '58). He's marking the milestone with an autobiography, an eight-disc retrospective collection and one last bid for the No.1 spot. If he succeeds, the Peter Pan of pop will have topped the charts in six consecutive decades - a stupidly impressive feat by anyone's standards.

As you'd expect, the single itself is cheesier than Alex James's finger nails. 'Thank You For A Lifetime' sounds like the theme tune to a second-rate 70s variety show, and its lyrics are almost painfully autobiographical ("50 years ago, a kid stood on the stage..."). Nevertheless, it would take a heart of stone to begrudge Cliff, in many ways the consummate pop professional, his one final moment of chart glory.

This is a dreadfully syruppy song, with a chorus that wreaks of Petula Clarke's 'Down Town' (Thaaaan-kyouuuuuuu). It's cheesier than a Frenchman's feet. There's also a brief allude to his first single 'Move It' - another woefully poor throwaway effort (although good enough to reach no. 2 in 1958). Just awful.

Average song- but i have downloaded it. Not even in Top 100 downloads on Itunes - I thought Cliff fans would have made special effort to get him to number one

Wish I'd found this discussion earlier. Cliff's single fantastic, he deserves to be number one. The song is not, arguably, in the same class as Devil Woman, We Don't Talk Anymore, or some of Cliff's other huge hits, but it is a great song for the moment, a wonderful way for Cliff to thank his fans for their support. People who think it is cheesy obviously think saying thank you is cheesy. I would just think it good manners. As for it being his one final moment of chart glory, who says? Cliff has a lot more to come yet, I don't doubt it.

It's a decent song that grows on you and speaks to Sir Cliff's own history. If anyone deserves what a #1 would represent, it's him. Hopefully, when the song comes out, it will a case of "Congratulations"!!!

I bought it because I wanted to see him hit the number one spot. I've been a fan since he started, but this track doesn't quite hit the mark for me. It's a fairly typical Cliff record...reasonable but only slightly catchy but it could well be one of those annoying choruses that spins around one's head all day that you can't get rid of! Had it not been his bid for a number one in this decade, I would never had bought it (sorry guys) but I prefer the more lively stuff like Wired for Sound and early R&R, the true Cliff recordings, but time marches on and tastes change, but essentially, I cannot stand most modern day music and I think anyone in there 50's/60's will share the same opinion. Perhaps in this case as the majority of fans are not youngsters, he should have Rock and Rolled it up a bit, maybe with a hit of Quo! A sure fire Number one would come of it. This record may just make it but only just. I think a number two or 3 at best. Hope I'm wrong.

The song is much better than I thought it would be. Melodically I like it, lyrically, hey it's the truth. He is Sir Cliff, he can basically do what he wants. He has earned. I do prefer something like What Car, love the uptempo songs. But this one is right for the moment.
