Geraldine: 'The Winner's Song'

Geraldine McQueen - formerly known as Gerald - was the victor on Kay's Britain's Got The Pop Factor... spoof on Sunday. Geraldine bears more than a passing resemblance to Pop Idol flop Michelle McManus, and her 'Winner's Song' is an exquisite pastiche of the regulation power ballads sung by previous pop contest winners. Penned by Kay and Gary Barlow, its ridiculous key change should keep us chuckling until the real thing comes along in December. Just one question: why isn't 'Free Nelson Mandela'/'Umbrella' a B-side?

"At what point did Peter Kay ever say it was for Charity?" I take it then that the pole dancers injured in the line of duty won't see a penny of this then :D

This song doesn't spoof the Xfactor, etc., it pay them all a wonderful tribute. The slow start, the key change, the bit where the glitter comes down... this (and the shows themselves) aren't music, they are entertainment - just like Strictly isn't really ballroom dancing. Simon Cowell created the music version of WWE wrestling and their "sports entertainment" concept. Wrestling fans don't like it any less because it is not real, and Xfactor fans love all the cheese and the back stories and the key changes (ideally whilst standing up). Remember Cowell brought us Robson and Jerome and those C4 puppets... don't take it seriously, and certainly don't feel offended that Peter Kay takes the mick out of it. It is all just innocent good fun!

I don't get why people think that this song "should be for charity". Do Peter Kay and Gary Barlow not have the right to get money out of this brilliant creation? People don't suggest that Peter Kay should give the income from his stand-ups to charity, so why should it be any different with his music? Anyway, the song is great! I'm not giving it all 5, though, as it doesn't sound as funny after the first few listens.

Completely agree with Steve (Below) It will just S**t all over the X factor winners song this christmas. I am so glad the the original judges made a comeback and saw an opportunity to take the mickey out of the X Factor. It's about time. Also, The Winners Song is a million times better than any other winners song I have heard in years. This is because it was written by Gary Barlow. A Songwriter with serious Talent.

NO-ONE ever said it was for charity, and why should it be? I fail to see why! and 'Leon' whoever he is has as ingle out the same time, what difference does that make? if it's any good he will sell it, if not he won't! So based on the charity argument, one assumes all artists/groups will be recording for 'charity only now? No ? I didn't think so! Mr Kay has shown the X Factor for what it is, a vehicle to take the p*** out of people in the auditions, then 'create' a one hit wonder by the end of the series, so that rakes in loads of money for Mr Cowell and the rest ! and of course the Christmas No1 is now a total waste of space!

I think it's great and just shows how X factor is a big joke. It takes a Christmas number 1 every year and Im sick of it. The only good we've gotten out of X factor is Leona Lewis the rest are a waste of time. I liked Shane Ward but he isn't much of a singer. Thats exactly what we need to show these people up. Well done.

At what point did Peter Kay ever say it was for Charity? More to the point, why should it be for charity any more than Leon's single or The Beatles? I wonder if Pink is equally cruel to bring out a popular song the same week as Leon Jackson (who'll we'll probably never hear of again after 2008)? Some people are clutching at straws I feel in order to knock Kay. In my opinion it was a brilliant job of mockery and without being overly tacky. Peter Kay reigns supreme in comedy and the charts!

He has deceived the public as everyone thought it was for charity, when infact he is just making money out of poking fun at a show, which whether you like it or not, does produce talent. I do have a sense of humour, but how can anyone find that childish attempt at comedy funny? I also think that it is cruel to bring out this 'song' at the same time as last years x factor winner's new single, therefore narrowing his chances of doing well in the charts. Leon's newly released single is his seroius attempt at making a career, why does someone who already has a career have to ruin the chances of others. I believe that this comeback of Peter Kay's has just shown him up for what he really is. I used to be a fan of him, but not anymore. I think that this has not done him any favours.

I did think that he has deceived the public as we all thought it was for charity. He has done one every year so thought this was. Otherwise wouldn't have bought it. Love Peter Kay but feel a bit let down.

Brilliant. Kay got everything right down to the smallest detail. Geraldine is a treasure - I love the video too. Applause too for Two Up Two Down - their 'b' side on the CD is a fabulous version too. Such a pity we didn't get to hear R Wayne's version though.

LOL, I don't know how people like westlife and all these other made for TV acts can take themselves seriously when this is happening! Peter Kaye and Gary Barlow have written a hilarious song which wouldn't sound out of place on a Leona Lewis album. The funniest fact is it beat the winner from last year's x factor in the charts this week. Well done. PS: The key change at the end had me rolling around on the floor with laughter. I even predicted they might do that!
