Girls Aloud: 'The Promise'

Is nobody safe? Even Girls Aloud have now succumbed to the craze for all things sixties that's enveloping British pop at the moment. Thankfully, being another collaboration with the Xenomania production team, 'The Promise' is that bit more interesting than the average retro-pop nugget.

In fact, it's a cute, wistful pop shuffle about a boy whose every move is "better than anything ordinary". With production that tips its cap towards vintage Spector, a key change so shameless even Simon Cowell would approve and a melody that grows more persuasive with every listen, there's no reason why this shouldn't become the group's 19th top ten hit. Happy days - as Cheryl would say.
